Yep, In My Skinny Jeans!

This year I got the chance to go to a party in Las Vegas where the New Boyz were performing. There is something about going to a function like that, where everyone is pin dropping despite the cramped quarters, that makes everyone want to say “I’m a Jerk.”

Katie Murray from Zoptopz with the New Boyz

Two years ago high schools and all age clubs in LA were filled with kids wearing pop neon colors, skinny jeans, colored hair and Mohawks. This group was a combination of skater kids, nerds, and hip hoppers. It took over music two years ago, but now the jerk movement is more than just a music fad: it’s a lifestyle.

The influence on the rest of the nation and world is growing. Because this culture started with 15 year olds from Hamilton High’s Academy of Music magnet program, it is a very young movement. The age demographic expands from 11 to 21. These are kids who relied upon their computers to make their music, make their own videos of themselves jerk dancing, and make themselves famous. With YouTube, anyone can be the next big star. Every teen across the nation can put together a crew and film their dances to gain popularity. Some of the huge dance crews are the Ranger$ (who were recently in a Justin Beiber music video), U.C.L.A. Jerk Kings (now Tha City Kingz), and Lol Kid$ among many others.

This movement started in California, and really began to take off when Cali radio stations started to pick it up. Some important players in Cali radio for the jerk movement: DJs from the Power 106 radio station like DJ Carisma and Felli Fel were the first people to bring Jerkin to a wider audience. DJ Goofy’s events are considered a jumping off point for jerk culture. Some notable jerk music groups are , Pink Dollaz, LaissWorld, Rej3ctz, Cold Flamez, Tay 3rd, YT, Bangz, Baby Dollz, and Asia Lynn.

We’re Jerkin’: How to Get That Swagger!

Katie Murray from Zoptopz with the New Boyz

Jerkin as a dance craze has been around for a few years now, and it’s style is showing no signs of slowing!  Zoptopz totally supports this movement — and we want to be a part of helping it grow.

The bold, bright colors shout for attention, and the tight fits show off nice bodies. If you want to get noticed then pin drop, reject, and tippie toe your way onto youtube and become a star.

The style of choice is as varied as the dance moves the teens are coming up with! Some good jerkin pants are skinny and colorful.  Popular colors are red, yellow, and purple. Tight jeans are almost universal with jerkers, even if they are a normal denim wash. Some good places to get skinny jeans are Hot Topic, and Urban Outfitters.

For your top, good jerking shirts will be in bold contrasting colors and preferably have a sassy slogan on them. Zazzle.com offers some fresh choices. Flannel shirts are a comfortable and popular choice to wear to your next function. And a nice accessory for that tee is a vest. These can be simple black or pinstripe and can be found for cheap at your local thrift stores.

The best accessories though are your caps and kicks! These are all important, and you could be wearing nothing else and pull off the jerkin style just with a nice hat and matching pair of shoes. These should be hyper colorful and perfectly coordinated. Some great options for your shoes are Vlado, Vans, or Converse. Vlado even sponsors the National Jerk Association (NJA). For hats, A completely original look is Zoptopz, with their crazy brim styles you would really stand out, even in that crowd! You could also rock fedoras, or newsboy caps.

However you rock it, the jerkin look requires plenty of confidence to make that swagger for real!

F.R.L. Topz Off With Some Crazy Rhymes

When we first told you about the exciting up and coming hip hop star F.R.L. we promised he would deliver a rap so fresh and new it would blow your minds! Little did we know that we would get something that not only blew our minds but totally put what Zoptopz is all about – the feeling, the style, the flavor – into some of the sickest rhymes we’ve seen in a while. F.R.L. put pen to paper and nailed out a rap for us that has become a constant fixture on my iPod and we hope it will for you as well. We have it posted on Zoptopz too and you tell us what you think.

With lines like, “Zoptopz poppin little things dropping, put my name on it and the world going rock it, the hat with a crimp the brim with a flip say what you wanna say I guess I’m on my fiffty tip!” F.R.L. held nothing back when it came to showing us all what it means when you put a Zoptopz cap on. What F.R.L. raps about, “Damn we on fire from the Zoptopz logo e-mail Ron tell him send another cargo!” is what we’ve been saying since the beginning – Zoptopz is hot.

When you look around at all the other caps people are wearing it is all the same brim, same style, same colors, same fabric, same, same, same. Zoptopz is about originality and uniqueness. That’s one reason we were so lucky to get F.R.L. on board with us. While other rappers are trying to fit in, F.R.L. wants to be outside the box. Which works great for Zoptopz because we never want to be in a class with anyone else. Hop out of the box and flip on a Zoptopz with us and you’ll see for yourself. As F.R.L. would say, “I’m guessing I’m the best cause I been blessed with a blessing I’m with Zoptopz so I’m Zoptopz repping.”

While Zoptopz was at the MAGIC event in Feburary 2010 in Las Vegas, NV, we decided to take the Zappos folks up on an offer to tour their office. Well, needless to say when you put Zoptopz folks in a crazy environment like Zappos, hilarity and fun is sure to ensue. We distributed over 60 free caps to Zappos employees – it was like Christmas part II. People there loved the caps!

But enough of the talk, we have video to prove it. Check it out below:

Zoptopz Hooks Up With Hip-Hop and R&B star Ja’Vion McVadian

The list of great artists lined up to represent Zoptopz, just seems to grow and grow. And as word on the streets heats up about Zoptopz, we were lucky enough to snag one of today’s hottest emerging artists, Ja’Vion McVadian. I was able to sit down with Ja’Vion for an interview and I wanted to know what it’s like when he steps on stage. Ja’Vion very honestly says, “I continually replay my possible actions in my mind over and over again up until I sing the first note. I concentrate on what I am going to sound like, look like, and move like. I want to look the best, sound the best, and perform the best no matter if it’s for one person, or 1000 people.”

It’s that kind of key intuition and drive that attracted us to Ja’Vion in the first place. He has taken his role as a leader in the industry to make a statement with is influence. He says, “I work in an environment where I see talented people everywhere and they are wasting their lives committing crimes and not living up to their full potential. I see youth literally throwing their lives away because of the examples my fellow peers leave them to follow.”
Like you I can’t wait to see what’s next for Ja’Vion but one thing I do know is that he’ll be hitting the streets wearing a Zoptopz cap!

A Whole New Kind Of Rap: F.R.L. Endorses Zoptopz

Talk about an exciting time for Zoptopz!  After thinking that MAGIC would be the highlight of the month, hooking up with Baltimore based rapper F.R.L. is proof the Zoptopz engine is still blazing hot. F.R.L. is currently working on a hot new rap just for Zoptopz that we can’t wait to showcase to everyone. Get ready to hear F.R.L.’s rap entitled, “Crimp Your Style” where Shawn will be putting his lyrical twist on how you crimping your style is a growing trend.

F.R.L. tells us he is eager to hop on board to rap about Zoptopz since he sees himself as a new kind of rapper with Zoptopz being an entirely new kind of cap (to say the least).  F.R.L.’s unique style has made him an emerging hip-hop star with a bright future ahead and we are just happy to welcome him to our family. As I type this, I can picture F.R.L.  at his desk or maybe in his car or even walking down the street thinking of rhymes about our caps and that alone gives me chills just in anticipation!

We will have the video and rap ready soon and know that when we do it go live right away. So, as F.R.L. would say, “Crimp your style” today. Make it hot and make it a Zoptopz.
